On May 5, 1921, Gabrielle Chanel introduced the world to a "woman's perfume, with a woman's scent." Perfumer Ernest Beaux presented her with a visionary expression that made unprecedented use of aldehydes. Mademoiselle chose the fifth sample and decided to call it N°5. The innovative composition, along with the rare austerity of the name and flacon, revolutionized the history of fragrance.
